1. முதலில் உங்கள் கருவியில் தமிழ் எழுத்துக்கள் சரியாக காண்பிக்கப்படுகிறதா என்று சோதிக்க இந்தப் பக்கத்தை உங்கள் கருவியில் உள்ள browser-இல் பார்க்கவும்.

குறிப்பு: பெரும்பாலனவர்களுக்கு இந்தப் பக்கத்தில் உள்ள தமிழ் எழுத்துகள் சரியாகத் தெரியும். ஒருவேளை இந்த பக்கம் சரியாகத் தெரியவில்லை என்றால், உங்கள் கருவியில் தமிழ் எழுத்துக்களுக்கான font இல்லை என்று பொருள். இதை எப்படிப் பெருவது என்பது இணையத்தில் உள்ளது. அதை நீங்கள் உங்கள் விருப்பப்படி செய்துகொள்ளுங்கள்.

2. கூகிள் பிளே ஸ்டோரில் இருந்து எனிசாப்ட்கீபோர்டு மென்பொருளைப் பதிவிறக்கம் செய்யவும். இந்த இணைப்பைப் பயன்படுத்தவும்.

3. எனிசாப்ட்கீபோர்டு தமிழ் இணைப்பை இந்த இணைப்பில் இருந்து பதிவிறக்கம் செய்யவும்.

4.இந்த இரண்டும் உங்கள் கருவியில் install செய்யப்பட்டபின், உங்கள் கருவியில் "Settings -> Language & Keyboard "க்குச் செல்லவும்.

5. அதில்  "AnySoftKeyboard"-ஐ அனுமதிக்கவும்.

6. உங்களிடம் இந்த மென்பொருளை நீங்கள் அனுமதிக்க விருப்பமா என்று கேட்கும். இது பொதுவாக எந்த தட்டச்சு மென்பொருள் பயன்படுத்தினாலும் கேட்கப்படுவதே! இது கட்டற்ற மென்பொருள். ஆகவே, பயமில்லாமல் அனுமதிக்கவும்.

7. இப்பொழுது, sms, browser அல்லது வேறு ஏதாவது எழுத்து உள்ளீடு செய்யும் பகுதிக்குச் சென்று, long press செய்யவும். ஆண்ட்ராய்டு 4+ கருவிகளில் notification பகுதியில் select input method மூலம் இதை செய்யலாம்.

8. ஒத்த ஓசையுடைய எழுத்துக்களை பெற அவற்றை long  press செய்யவும். எடுத்துக்காட்டாக "ஆ" டைப் செய்ய "அ"-வை long press செய்யவும். "ய" டைப் செய்ய "ஐ"-யை long press செய்யவும்.

9. உயிர்மெய் எழுத்துகளைப் பெற மெய் எழுத்தை முதலில் டைப் செய்துவிட்டு பின் அதற்கான உயிரெழுத்து இணைப்பை டைப் செய்யவும். எடுத்துக்காட்டாக "பூ" டைப் செய்ய, "ப" டைப் செய்துவிட்டு, பின் "உ"-வை long press செய்து வேண்டிய துணை எழுத்தைத் தேர்வுசெய்யவும்.

10. "AnySoftKeyboard settings"-இல் "suggestion"-ஐ நிறுத்துவதன் மூலம், உங்கள் தட்டச்சு அனுபவம் மேலும் நன்றாக இருக்கும்.

சிறப்பம்சங்கள்:

1.  முற்றிலும் கட்டற்ற மென்பொருள். விளம்பரங்களோ கட்டணமோ இல்லை. மூல நிரலைப்பெற இங்கே சொடுக்கவும்.

2. ஆங்கில QWERTY தட்டச்சைப் மனதில் கொண்டு வடிவமைக்கப் பட்டது. ஆகவே, எழிதாக நினைவல் வைத்துக்கொள்ளலாம்.

3. ஒரே தொடுதலில் தமிழ் மற்றும் ஆங்கில மொழிகளுக்கிடையே மாற்றிக்கொள்ளலாம்.

4. பயன்படுத்த இணைய இணைப்பு தேவை இல்லை.

5. சிறிய அளவிலான மென்பொருள். வேகமாகவும் இயங்கும்.

6. ஒரு லட்சத்திற்கும் மேற்பட்ட பயனர்கள். 4+ நட்சத்திர புள்ளிகள் பெற்றது.

Tamil Keyboard for Android

Now a days, everybody is having one or more Android device(s). Also there are lot of content in Tamil around the Internet. But the main hurdle we have is, how to search for Tamil content if we can't search in Tamil? Google, Yahoo, Bing, DuckDuckGo all index Tamil content. But how can we search it? Typing in English? At least in PC, we can use online Tamil transliteration sites or software for typing in Tamil. But in mobile or tablet?

Here comes a decent Android app to your rescue. AnySoftKeyboard with Tamil layout extension.

Please follow the below steps to get this awesome app in your mobile:

1. Check any Tamil website and ensure that you have proper Tamil font support. Most popular brands come with excellent Indic fonts support. But some mobiles have broken support (render Tamil letters incorrectly) or lack Tamil fonts (display them as boxes). To make sure, open this page in your mobile/tablet browser and check the below line.

6. A dialog box will open and will warn you about possible key-logging attacks which can be done by this keyboard application. Note: This is a generic message, and will be shown when you enable any keyboard application.

7. Long press on one of the text input field (select input method from notification area in Android 4+). A dialog will pop-up. Choose AnySoftKeyboard

8. I suggest you to turn off auto suggestion in "AnySoftKeyboard settings" in settings menu or by long-pressing "enter" button. This improves Tamil typing speed.

9. Long press characters to get similar characters as a pop-up. For example, ஆ can be typed by long pressing அ. Similarly, தீ can be typed by first typing த and then long pressing இ and choosing appropriate compound letter.

Book Review: Kurunthogai Portrait (குறுந்தொகை ஓவியம்)

Unless wrapped with religion or made compulsory in curriculum, we ignore these gems for cheap arts like cinema and TV serials. Kurunthogai (குறுந்தொகை) is one of the books in Ettuthogai (எட்டுத்தொகை), which means "Collection of Eight books".  ”Kuru” means short and ”Thogai” means consolidation or compilation. The songs in Kurunthogai were written by numerous authors. The themes involve love and romance and hence classified as ”agam” (அகம்) literature, a literary genre that discusses love while maintaining anonymity of the parties involved. Tamils gave importance to privacy even centuries before.

Scholars estimate that the compilation happened in 7 century AD. It is one of the so called ”Sangam literature” (சங்க இலக்கியம்).  Whatever! I don't mind how old the literature is, but how good matters a lot for me.

Now, coming to this book, ”Kurunthogai Portrait”. It is an English paraphrase (I feel translation is not the right word) of the Tamil literature. It contains the Tamil songs in Tamil script immediately followed by English paraphrase. As you have Tamil songs in their original form, you can enjoy its beauty fully. The English paraphrase provides easy access to the meaning of the songs.

The English used by the writer is lucid. The sentences are deliberately made small in order to avoid confusion. The book has a list of Tamil words used within the paraphrase and their meaning for easy reference of readers. So if you are a person without in depth Tamil knowledge to understand the meaning of Tamil songs, then you can also benefit from this book.

This book is also suitable for readers who don't know Tamil at all. They can just leave the Tamil songs and read the paraphrase alone. So it is a win-win for everyone from hardcore Tamil literature freaks to those who don't even know what Tamil is. So this book is a must have even if you have slightest interest in Tamil literature!
